Artist's statement

"In my work, I often use an inductive method of artistic research. I circle the topic, which is usually quite broad and sometimes only vaguely defined, until a certain amount of information, and, more importantly, a certain number of experience and meetings with people have accrued. Then, I classify, reduce and simplify these. The result of my project is often a complex installation; importance is put mainly on the relationships between its heterogenous parts.

Although I’m working with „knowledge“, I try not to be too smart and demanding of the viewer. I don’t mind if certain relationships remain unexplained. Knowing starts with a glimpse of inspiration and ends with records of memories piling up in archives. Paradoxically, as time passes, these gain the character of something unknown which needs to be researched, explained, or just stared at. Rather than being interested in the accumulation of knowledge, I am interested in its digestion.

My work is usually based on cooperation and a series of meetings with various people. At times, I work with scientists; at other times with children or old people, archivists, curators of museum collections, sailors, or prisoners. My collaborators sometimes don’t know that they are a part of a plan. I am interested in social engineering on a small scale, which to me is a different practice than social art. I also feel close to fantastic conceptualism.

During my stay in Vienna I will research symbolic forests, the education of pensioners and life-long learners, and the specific concept of memorial as seen at the Orthodox Jews, i.e. creating a mental memorial by memorizing a certain text."
